Why Children & Teens Struggle With Gut Issues + Anxiety

Teen gut symptoms are almost never “just a stomach problem.”
They come from a gut–mind stress loop — where the nervous system reacts first, and the gut follows.

This can look like:
• morning nausea
• IBS symptoms that flare on school days
• bathroom worries
• fear of eating before school
• meal avoidance in the morning
• anxiety showing up as stomach pain
• overthinking or perfectionism creating body tension
• symptoms disappearing on weekends or holidays

This doesn’t mean something is wrong with your teen.
It means their gut–brain system needs support, calm, and retraining.

The gut and brain communicate constantly through the gut–brain axis. When the nervous system is overwhelmed, the gut becomes more sensitive, reactive, and uncomfortable — especially in the mornings, before school, or during stress. Our work helps reset this communication system so your teen’s body feels safer and calmer again.

Introducing: The Teen Gut–Mind Program™

A supportive, evidence-based program combining CBT, gut-directed hypnotherapy, and nervous-system tools to help teens:

  • calm their stomach
  • reduce anxiety
  • ease morning symptoms
  • feel more confident
  • handle school stress without physical reactions

Why Young People Need a Different Approach Than Adults

Children and teenagers are not small adults — their gut, nervous system, hormones, and cognitive patterns are more sensitive and more reactive.
This is why adult IBS approaches often don’t work for teens.

They need:
• gentler, shorter techniques
• age-appropriate CBT adapted to their thinking style
• emotional regulation work that fits developing brains
• gut–mind tools they can use at school or in the mornings
• a practitioner trained in teen anxiety and gut responses

This is why the Teen Gut–Mind Program™ is structured differently from the adult program — and why it works so effectively.

Your child won’t be pushed, rushed, or overwhelmed — everything is adapted to their pace and comfort.

The 3-Step Teen Gut–Mind Process™

We strengthen emotional regulation, reduce overthinking, and help them feel safer and more grounded — at school, at home, and in new situations.

Most teens respond extremely well within 4 core sessions.
This is a structured, neurobiologically-informed program that includes gut–brain psychoeducation, mind–body tools, nervous system regulation, and a tailored gut-directed hypnosis reset each week.

Some young people may need a little longer and benefit from additional sessions, and we’ll always discuss that together at Session 3 or 4.

1 x 60-75 Minute Initial Consultation

A full clinical assessment exploring your child's IBS pattern or gut issue, triggers, morning symptoms, nervous-system profile, stress–gut responses, and school-related pressures.  This program also works for anxiety, worry and overwhelmed teens.
Together, we build a personalised gut–mind retraining plan that fits their symptoms, personality, and routine.

Each session blends:
• CBT strategies adapted for teens

Why Teens Get Stomach Pain in the Mornings

Morning stomach pain in teens is rarely “just a tummy ache.” When a young person wakes up, the nervous system is at its most sensitive — especially if they’re feeling pressure about school, social expectations, or a busy day ahead.

As soon as the brain detects stress, the gut–brain axis switches into protection mode, increasing nausea, urgency, cramping, or that familiar “tight stomach” feeling.

For teens, whose bodies and hormones are still developing, this response can be stronger and more reactive. That’s why symptoms often appear before school but ease on weekends or holidays: the gut isn’t malfunctioning — it’s responding to stress signals.

Once we retrain that stress–gut loop, mornings become calmer, steadier, and far more predictable.

What Improvement Looks Like

Most children experience:
• calmer mornings
• reduced stomach pain or nausea
• fewer urgent bathroom trips
• feeling safe eating breakfast again
• improved confidence
• reduced anxiety spikes
• better sleep
• fewer overwhelm/shutdown moments
• more predictable digestion
• feeling like themselves again

What Is Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy?

Gut-directed hypnotherapy is an evidence-based approach shown in clinical studies to reduce IBS symptoms, calm the digestive system, and retrain the gut–brain connection.

Unlike traditional hypnosis, this approach uses guided imagery, CBT principles, and nervous-system regulation techniques to help the gut respond more calmly to stress, food, mornings, and school pressure.

Your teen remains fully aware, fully in control, and the sessions feel gentle, safe, and similar to a guided relaxation.

Gut-directed hypnotherapy is supported by over 30 years of research and is recommended in clinical guidelines for IBS and functional gut disorders.
