Clinical Referrals for Gut-Brain Therapy

Gut-directed hypnotherapy and CBT-informed support for IBS and disorders of gut–brain interaction

I provide structured, evidence-informed gut-brain therapy for adults, adolescents and children experiencing persistent digestive symptoms where nervous-system reactivity, symptom anticipation, anxiety or learned gut-brain patterns are contributing to the clinical picture.

Sessions are available online worldwide, with in-person appointments also available in the UK..

Refer A Patient

Why Refer?

For many patients, medical or dietetic treatment addresses part of the picture, but symptoms can continue to be reinforced by gut–brain reactivity, anxiety, hypervigilance, avoidance and fear of flare-ups.

My role is to work with this part of the clinical picture.

I can work alongside GPs, gastroenterologists, dietitians  and other healthcare professionals, providing focused therapeutic support without replacing appropriate medical care.

Referral may be particularly helpful for patients experiencing:

  • IBS or other medically assessed gut–brain symptoms
  • Urgency and toilet anxiety
  • Stress-related symptom flare-ups
  • Fear and anticipation around digestive symptoms
  • Food, travel or social avoidance
  • Persistent symptom monitoring or hypervigilance
  • Anxiety that is increasing the impact of their digestive condition

What Patients Receive

Treatment is structured around the individual rather than simply providing a course of generic hypnosis.

Depending on their needs, patients may receive:

  • Gut-directed hypnotherapy
  • CBT-informed strategies
  • Nervous-system regulation techniques
  • Personalised therapeutic audio recordings
  • Practical tools for urgency, anxiety and flare-ups
  • Worksheets and between-session exercises
  • Access to a private online support portal with additional resources and education
  • Strategies they can continue using independently after therapy

The aim is not simply to help a patient feel relaxed during a session, but to help them change the patterns that are maintaining the gut–brain response in everyday life.

Working Alongside You

Gut–brain therapy can sit alongside medical, psychological and dietetic treatment.

Where appropriate, and with the patient's consent, I am happy to communicate with the referring clinician and work collaboratively as part of their wider care.

This can be particularly useful where a patient has been appropriately investigated but continues to experience significant symptoms, anxiety, avoidance or disruption to everyday life.

Specialist Support for Adults & Young People

I work with adults as well as children and teenagers, adapting treatment to their age, presentation and individual needs.

For younger clients, parents are involved where appropriate and are given guidance to help support progress outside sessions.

Why Include Gut–Brain Therapy in the Care Pathway?

For some patients with IBS, appropriate medical and dietetic care is only part of the solution. Persistent symptoms can become increasingly influenced by altered gut–brain signalling, visceral sensitivity, symptom anticipation and learned patterns of fear and avoidance.

76.3% Responded

In a study of 448 patients with refractory IBS, 76.3% achieved the predefined response threshold of at least a 50-point reduction in IBS Symptom Severity Score following gut-directed hypnotherapy.

6 sessions

A randomised study found six sessions of gut-directed hypnotherapy were non-inferior to twelve, supporting the potential for meaningful treatment within a relatively focused intervention.

Recognised in UK guidance

NICE recommends considering psychological interventions including CBT and hypnotherapy for people with refractory IBS, while the British Society of Gastroenterology now classifies IBS as a disorder of gut–brain interaction.

Gut–brain therapy gives clinicians an additional evidence-based pathway for patients who have been medically assessed but remain symptomatic, restricted by their condition, or caught in persistent symptom–anxiety cycles.
